FIRST FEMALE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

IN SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA

Evelyn Demoplos Caskey, member of the Hall of Fame in Scottsdale, Arizona died on October 19, 2018 at age 91 in Escondido, California. Mrs. Caskey was the first female high school principal in Scottsdale, Arizona at Scottsdale High School and is considered legendary among the graduates of that school. Mrs. Caskey was a graduate of Calumet High School in Chicago and the University of Chicago. She taught classes on "Seminar 61" via the Chicago area CBS Affiliate in 1960-61 as well as Calumet High School before her move to Scottsdale's Coronado High School as a social studies teacher for seven years. Mrs. Caskey became an assistant principal at Scottsdale High School for 4 years before being promoted to become the principal of that school. One of her students Julia C. Patrick recently wrote, "We were fortunate to have the first woman high school principal in Scottsdale, the legendary Evelyn Caskey. She was a dominant figure, who taught me leadership in many ways. About once a month or so, Mrs. Caskey would venture into our lunchtime meetings of teen drama and angst to check up on us and offer a teachable moment." Mrs. Caskey remained at Scottsdale High School until the school closed in 1988 before becoming the principal of Chapparal High School. Mrs. Caskey loved to attend sporting events at the high schools where she was principal and cheered along with the students. She has been recognized all over the world by former students. They have stopped her on the street and asked, "Are you Mrs. Caskey?" When she would respond, "yes," they would usually say, "You were my principal at Scottsdale High School or Chapparal High School. I thought you were a great principal." She will long be remembered. Mrs. Caskey leaves behind her sister, Joanne Terry, of Escondido, California and her cousins Kay Pantelis, San Diego, California, Georgia Menges, Tustin, California, Bertha Weldy, South Bend, Indiana, and Frances Carantza of Houston, Texas. Burial services for Mrs. Caskey will be held at the Greenwood Memory Lawn 2300 West Van Buren, Phoenix, AZ at 12 noon on Friday, Nov. 2. Interested people are invited to attend.
